Mangadu Kamakshiamman Temple Chennai history

In Mangadu Devi Adhikamakshiamman is seen doing severe penance, with left leg in the Panchagni, right leg folded, right hand holding japamala over her head. Panchagni Sadhana is performed to kill five evils which dominate the mind leading one towards misery. The five evils are Kama (Desire), Krodha (Anger), Lobha (Greed), Madha (Ego) & Maacharya (Attachment).

Later Lord Shiva married her at Kancheepuram. Kamakshiamman while leaving the place to marry Lord Shiva did not extinguish the fire and so the entire area suffered from the heat for a long time. Adi Shankaracharya came and installed Sri Ardhameru Chakram made of herbs in the temple and extinguished the fire.

The Mangadu Kamakshiamman Temple Chennai temple was built in the place where Goddess Kamakshi performed penance. Kumkumarchana is performed to the Sri Ardhameru Chakram and no abhishekams are held as the Sri Chakram is made of Herbs.
