This mosque was built in the year 1810 in the Old Madras. During that period the Mosque was just a small hall that was built by Arcot Family where Shia Muslims used it for conducting meeting among their people during the time of Muharram. The entire purpose of the construction was used for the discussions and meetings. Later on the development took place by constructing a shrine inside the hall. Then later on when the years passed, the shrine was developed and made into a perfect mosque. During the initial stages, the hall was lighted with one thousand lamps. This lighting of one thousand lamps was done when the hall was present. This gave a historical name to the Mosque and also the place. The place which is around the Thousand Lights Mosque is now called as Thousand Lights. This name attracts the tourists and they always have a question in mind on why this name came to the mosque. The actual construction of this mosque took place in the year 1820.

Even though it is said that the holy mosque was lighted with one thousand lamps with oil, it is said that Indian National Congress provided lights during the annual session for visiting the city for the first time.
