The Thiruvannamalai Sri Annamalaiar festival is very famous in Tamil Nadu. The Karthigai Deepam festival in Thiruvannamalai is celebrated for Ten days. On the final day / Tenth day the huge flame called Raja Deepam is lighted on the top of the Annamalaiar hill. The light is very giant that it could be visible from even twenty five kilo meters. The Raja Deepam is lighted in commemoration of Lord Shiva who took a great fire Ruba to prove his mighty power in the universe.

The Hindu scripts acknowledge that there was a giant fight between Lord Brahman and Lord Vishnu. The two said that they are the most powerful than the other. Lord Shiva who is the great divine God wanted to teach a lesion for this two Lord Brahman and Lord Vishnu that He is the only ultimate being in the world. Lord Shiva has taken a Ruba of fire and appeared before these two gods. The fire was very huge and can't be described. Lord Shiva in the form of fire said to Lord Brahman and Lord Vishnu that who ever reaches the top and the bottom of the. Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahman went to the each side. One went to the high to find the top of the fire and the other went down digging the earth to find the bottom of the starting fire. Lord Shiva and Lord Brahman had travelled for years and years but failed to reach the end of the fire. The two gods could not find the starting and ending place of the fire. Lord Shiva and Lord Brahman understood their mistake and accepted Lord Shiva as the ultimate God of the universe.

Lord Brahman and Lord Vishnu thought that if Lord Shiva stays on this earth then the people will never feel worried. The people will be well looked after by Lord Shiva himself. And so there will not be any more problem for the people who live on this earth. So in order to fulfill their desire they both begged Lord Shiva to remain with them on this earth and help the poor people who are in his need. To make them happy Lord Shiva himself accepted to stay with them on this earth. Then Lord Shiva took the form of a giant hill and remained with the people for ever. This Lord Shiva's hill is now said to be the Sri Annamalaiar Hill in Thiruvannamalai.

After year the temple was build for Lord Shiva. In this place Lord Shiva is called in the name of Annamalaiar. After various kings' valuable contribution the Sri Annamalaiar Temple has taken the present form. So in remembrance of Lord Shiva's great form the Karthigai Deepam is festival is celebrated. It is believed that on this special occasion on Karthigai Deepam the Lord Shiva's light is opened and shedding upon the human beings.
