Where is Kutralam
Kutralam is situated at 160m on the Western Ghats in Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu. Many seasonal and some recurrent rivers are here. The Chittar River, Manimuthu, Panchaiyar and the Tambaraparani River start off from this region.
In Kutralam Lord Shiva is worshipped in the name of Thirukurtalanathar and the temple at the outside edge of the main falls. This is the place where Saint Agastya came to avoid an imbalance due to overcrowding in Mt.Kailas on Lord Shiva's wedding. Lots of inscriptions are here about Cholas and pandya kings. You can see many small halls inside the temple having statues of Lord Vishnu, Kasi Visalakshi, Kasi Viswanathar, Nellaiyappar and Navagrahas.
Location of Kutralam
It is 5 km from Sengoottai; 6 km form Tenkasi 70km from srivilliputtur and 640 km from Chennai. The nearest airport is Tuticorin which 86 km away. The railway station nearest is Sengottai (5km)
Kutralam is a very small town, but packed with tourists during weekends and season time. Numerous lodges and hotels are here to stay but when the waterfalls dry up and the weather is too hot these hotels are empty. The peak season to visit Kutralam is between June and September.
The Kutralam water falls has lot of herbal values, which reduces Hypertensions and relaxes our mind. There is belief that this waterfalls helps to resolve psychological disorder.
Main attraction is the waterfalls. There are three major water falls – Main Falls, Five falls and Old Kutralam Falls which you can reach by road. Shenbaga Devi Falls and Honey Falls – can reach only by trekking on the mountain. Tiger falls is a smaller falls near Old Kutralam Falls., where you can see tigers come looking for water. Boat Houses near five falls and old Kutralam falls, Snake Park, public aquarium, park and play areas are also there.
