The Sthalasayana Perumal, Mahabalipuram


The Sthalasayana Perumal temple is a se shore temple in Mahabalipuram . It is a rock cut temple built during the Pallava reign.

This is one of the shore temples in Mahabalipuram located near the bus terminus. The main deity worshiped here is Lord Vishnu.

Legend: It is said that sage Pundareeka worshiped Lord Vishnu here. He offered pujas with Lotus flowers. One day with the greatest ambition to see the Lord he started piling the sea waters.

Pleased with his devotion the Lord came to him in disguise as old man and asked for food. When the sage went and brought food for the old man, he was surprised to see the Lord’s image of Ananthasayanam there. He also saw the lotus flowers which was offered by him that day at the Lord’s feet. The sage understood that the old man was Lord himself came to bless him.

About the shrine: Main shrine is for Lord Vishnu as Ananthasayanam and the godess Lakshmi is known as Nilamangai.

It is the birth place of Boothathazhvar . This Alwar had composed beautiful pasurams (poems) in praise of the Lord which is known as Divya Prabhandhams.
