Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram is a small town in Kancheepuram district which attracts tourists in large numbers with its famous sea shore temples and sculptors . This town was an important sea port of South during the Pallava rulers . Mahabalipuram is about 60 K.M south of Chennai city.

Mamallapuram is named after the Pallava king Mamalla means great wrestler. This place is famous for its rock cut temples and carvings which are great monuments of Pallava art and architecture. Most of these rock carvings and monuments built between 7th and 9th century. This site is classified as UNESCO world heritage site. Art historians traces the roots of Pallava architecture to similar rock carvings of Ajanta and Ellora . They are of the opinion that after the victory of Pallava king Narasimhavarman over the Chalukiya king Pulakesin II , he could have brought the sculptors as spoils of war and made them work for him.

One of the great attraction of these carvings is the five rathas (chariots ) carved out of a single granite piece. These five rathas are of five different styles. It is believed that this place might have been a school for young sculptors where the masters would have given demonstrations . Some of the monuments are seen half finished .

How to reach: There are lot of state transport buses ply between Chennai city and Mahabalipuram. Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation has one day tour programmes which includes all the tourist spots within and nearby the city.
