Wallajah Mosque or Big Mosque is the first and biggest mosques in Chennai
Wallajah Mosque in triplicane is also known as “Big mosque” . This mosque is situated near Jam Bazar area and is also a little away from Queiad-e-Milleth high road.
About the Mosque:
This is the first and the biggest mosque in the city which was built towards the end of 18th century , in 1795 to be precise. The mosque is associated with Nawab Wallajah’s family since it was built by the Nawab’s family in memory of the Nawab.
Special features of the Mosque:
This mosque is built in 1795 stands as historical momument in Chennai. The architecture of this mosque is a fusion of medieval Indian, Islamic and Iranian styles . The structure is built out of gray granite. Neither wood or steel has been used in any part of this mosque since these are susceptible to elements.
The Big mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques in Chennai city and attract lot of tourists who visit Chennai. It is also a very important pilgrim site for Muslims in the city. During festivals like Ide lot of Muslims visit this mosque.
How to reach:
You can reach this mosque by bus or share autos or call taxi. There are lot of state transport buses plying to and from Triplicane.
