Significance of Chepauk Stadium

As part of the Pongal festivities, Test matches are organised at the Chepauk Stadium,Chennai. The very first Test match at this venue (1933-34) was between India and England. C K Nayudu led team India, while Douglas Jardine captained the England team.

Plenty of records have been re-written at the Chepauk Stadium,Chennai. One of these was during the Ranji Trophy match that was first held at this venue - the Chennai team (at that time it was the Madras team) won over their rivals, the Mysore team, thanks to the steamrolling bowling tactics of AG Ram Singh who took all 11 wickets! Also, it was at the Chepauk Stadium,Chennai that India spin bowler Narendra Hirwani took 16 wickets, giving away just 136 runs -he thus entered the record books for having the best match figures for a Test debutant.

There are so many more records that the pitch at Chepauk stadium has tossed up, that it is difficult to minimise them in this space!
