Chennai beaches get cleaned before Ridley nesting season.

February is the season for Olive Ridley turtles to turn up in the Chennai Beaches to lay eggs and nest.

On Sunday, the 24th January 2010, the volunteers of ROB along with 50 youngsters will clean up the stretch of 7km from the mouth of Adayar river behind Theosophical soceity up to Neelankarai. The cleaning up of the beach stretch have been going on for almost 3 decades to help the Olive Ridley turtles to nest.

Students and Volunteers walk the beach stretch from the month of December till April and collect the eggs and deposit them in the hatchery where artificial nests are made just the same way that of the natural ones.

Once the eggs hatch, the hatchlings move to the sea using the reflection on the water made by the moon. The wonder is that the female baby turtles return to this same spot when they become adults and when it is time for them to nest.
