My Childhood Memories of Marina Beach, Chennai

Marina Beach and my Childhood, I have very fond memories about the longest beach in Chennai and of course in India, as well as being the second longest beach in the whole world.

Days have gone by and everything else has changed except my longing to go to Marina Beach, but it is not the same old Marina Beach which I had grown up with.
Those beautiful sands are just not as inviting they were in the olden days

Just thinking about Marina Beach in Chennai, takes me back to my nostalgic memories of school going days. My siblings and I, always used to pester our parents to take us to the Marina beach. Marina Beach is the second longest beach in the whole world and the most beautiful one too.

There is a wide expanse of sands, we could play ball, build houses and caves in the wet sands near the water or just play in the water, as much as we liked.
We could see people here and there in the beach in those days. Kids and the elderly people used to have fun eating Thenga Manga Pattani sundal and Milagu Vadai, famous Madras snacks in those days and also Varukadalai / Roasted Groundnuts / Peanuts. Those days were heavenly.

Nowadays the scenes have changed in the Marina Beach. If we go to the beach in the weekends, be it morning or the evening, we will not get a place to stand, let alone play in the water or make sand castles. Shopkeepers with their ware have put up stands here and there, selling items like trinkets made out of the shells they get from the beach and food items etc.

Now, not only Thenga manga Pattani Sundal, you can get Chaats and Bhelpuris from Bombay to Fish fry in Chettinadu style you can get in these shops. The enjoyment of going and enjoying is still there but it is not the calm and relaxing kind anymore.

There are many statues there at the Marina Beach at present. When we were kids we could see only statue of Mahatma Gandhi and a Statue of Labour.
Statue of Labour at Marina Beach is a splendid sculpture depicting the efforts of a team of labourers who are at strenuous, manual work which mostly goes unnoticed by others.

There are many tourists who come to Chennai for the sole purpose of seeing Marina Beach. You can find famous hotels in the vicinity, like the famous and good Old Woodlands Hotel, a famous Hotel Saravana Bhavan restaurant and Karaikudi a chettinad restaurant and many more.
