The place Gokarnam is so called since the heavenly Cow kamadhenu came to earth to this place to do penance when it was cursed by Devendra . It is believed that Kamadhenu came here taking water from Ganges in its ears (karnam) and did abhishekam to Lord Siva here. So the Lord is known as Gokarneswarar. Once the Lord wanted to test the cow and manifested in the form of a tiger and waited for Kamadhenu . when it arrived the tiger pounced on its prey. The cow requested the tiger to wait till it finished its pooja to the Lord and feed the calf . The tiger let it go . After completing its duties the cow returned to the place. The Lord was pleased with Kamadhenu and gave darshan to it. In this place is the present Jagadambal temple constructed by the kings ruled Pudukkottai. This Ambal is also known as Arai Kasu Amman. In 1906 the king of Pudukkottai introduced a coin with Amman printed in one side and on the other side the word "Vijayam" was printed. This coin was in use till 1948. This Goddess is worshipped by people to set right their personal problems like delay in marriage, childbirth etc . A special pooja performed at night to put the deity to sleep. It is believed that by doing this pooja and offering Ambal hot milk with cardamam and sugar (Palli Arai pooja) evil effects with regard to horoscope will be cleared . Another speciality in this temple is whoever comes and pray in front of Ambal when they lost some precious belongings they will get back the same immediately. It is the practice here that when they get back their lost articles, they used to take arati to Ambal offering some jagarine without fail.
