According to mythology, this place got the name since Goddess Lakshmi once ascended here from her heavenly abode due to some misunderstanding with Lord Vishnu and did penance here which was previously known as Thulasivanam. Samudrarajan (Lord of Ocean) made a visit to Vaikuntam when the Goddess was not there and found Lord Vishnu in a sad mood. When enquired he was told by the Lord that Lakshmi had left the place . Then Samudrarajan promised the Lord that he will find out the whereabouts of his daughter (Lakshmi emerged from the milky ocean when it was churned for ambrosia and hence she is known as Samudrathanaya –daughter of Samudraraja). He searched for her in heaven and earth and at least came to Thulasivanam and found her in a meditative posture. In his over enthusiasm he called out to her “Ennai Pettra Thaye” and saluted the Goddess. As promised Samudrarajan united the Goddess with Lord Vishnu. Later in this place this temple of Sri Bhakthavatsala Perumal was constructed . Rjagopuram is facing east. Here the main deity is Sri Bhakthavatsala perumal (along with Sridevi and Bhudevi).
