Nov 30th 2009 - last date for registering imei numbers

Tamil Nadu Government has decided to ban handsets which do not have any proper IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identuty Numbers). These numbers are used to trace the owner of the handset with the help of MSAI (Mobile Standards Alliance India) and the cellular operators. At present some of the imported phones do not have this genuine IMEI numbers.

How to Know your IMEI Number:

You can find out your mobile's IMEI number by typing #06# on your mobile screen. You will get a 15 digit number which is your IMEI number.

To verify if the number you got is a genuine one you can send an sms with IMEI( that is your 15 digit number) to 53232.

If the reply tells you that the number is not genuine, then you can implant a genuine number under the GII program (Genuine IMEI Implant), by contacting your mobile / cellular operator. The cost will be Rs 199/ per phone.

    Last date:
After November 30 2009 the phones without genuine IMEI numbers will cease to function under any network.
