In general the history of Chennai is very interesting. In the initial stages there were no city with the name of Chennai or Madras. Though the name Chennai was given before few years, it is very common that the older Chennai was called as Madras or Madrasa Pattinam even before Madras. In the north India the people of Madras were also called as Madrasi. The most interesting part to be noted is that the Cooum River that is flowing in Chennai now as a very dirty recognition for Chennai was the major water source for the agriculture irrigation and drinking water source for Chennai. In the recent years the Cooum River was contaminated and also this resulted in the water scarcity. There was no city named Madras or Chennai until the 17th century. But there were a few villages scattered here and there. The important among them were Chenna Patnam, Mylapore and Triplicane. Though the later two merged with Chenna Patnam and formed the city of Madras, which is renamed as Chennai, they retained their religious, cultural and traditional values. There were also special culture and traditions that were followed in Chennai and later after the invasion of the foreign culture the life trends of people changed gradually.
